History & Significance
From the 17th century, the British Royal Navy was “dressing ship” with bunting. They decorated their ships with woolen fabrics to signal allegiance or communicate other messages. By the time of the American Revolution, colonists were building on this tradition by displaying red, white, and blue bunting in support of independence. The meanings of the colors developed over time: red for valor, white for purity, and blue for vigilance. Pulldowns emerged as a type of vertical bunting designed to hang from high places, helping prevent fabric from touching the ground while maintaining a formal, decorative appearance.
