History and Significance

Designed by Dixie Cornell Gebhardt in 1917 and officially adopted in 1921, the vertical blue, white, and red stripes reflect Iowa’s French heritage. The bald eagle symbolizes the United States, and the ribbon bears the state motto: “Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain.”
