History & Significance
The Flag Act of 1777 established the first official American Flag as having thirteen alternating red and white stripes with a union of thirteen stars on a blue field, but it didn’t specify a star pattern. Therefore, several variations of the Stars and Stripes were produced. The one that would come to be known as the Betsy Ross Flag has a circular pattern of stars in the canton.
