The mission and purpose of each branch of the military is specified in various sections of Title 10 and 14 in the U.S. Code.

(1) preserve the peace and security, and providing for the defense, of the United States, the Commonwealths and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States

(3) implement the national objectives
(4) overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States.<1>
