Minnesota is poised to welcome a new state flag in 2024.

After extensive deliberations, The State Emblems Redesign Commission has chosen a design that reflects Minnesota's nickname, "the North Star State."

The flag's key features include a distinctive shape resembling the contours of Minnesota itself, adorned with an eight-point North Star positioned to face due north. This star, intended to be dubbed the "Minnesota Star," draws inspiration from the marble star at the heart of the state Capitol rotunda, which symbolically represents the North Star State.

Minnesota's flag redesign commission reviewed over 2,000 design proposals before deciding on a concept submitted by Andrew Prekker of Luverne. Prekker's original flag design featured a green line for nature, white for snow, and blue for water, with a goal of unifying Minnesotans and fostering inclusivity. The final design simplified Prekker's original concept, incorporating ideas from multiple submissions.

"I'm so proud to be able to say I helped design the new Minnesota state flag,” Prekker shared in an email read aloud during the final deliberations.

The eight-point star was chosen from various entries, and the suggestion to maintain the state's symmetrical shape was a late addition from another designer. The commission's decision to keep the design simple, avoiding an overload of symbols, has been met with both praise and criticism.

Overall, the evolving emblem of Minnesota reflects a deliberate effort to balance simplicity, representation, and inclusivity in a symbol that is poised to stand the test of time.

The new design will replace Minnesota's existing flag on May 11, 2024.
